We recently put together a sneaker snacks themed board on our Pinterest page but we thought we’d also share these images with our blog readers because it’s amazing just how many people make Converse cakes.  We couldn’t believe how real some of them look.

Our favourite are the cupcakes with mini Chuck Taylors perched on top waiting for someone to devour them!

We love keeping an eye on emerging shoe trends and something tells us that florals are coming through in a big way!  From Converse to Keds and sneakers to wedges, it seems everyone is adorning their shoes with floral prints.

Converse has recently dropped its new collection of Floral Print Chuck Taylors which feature vintage inspired floral designs that ooze nostalgia.  Converse has also released a Jack Purcell Floral range with purposefully faded uppers for that well worn look.

Keds has jumped on the floral train with some of their wedges now featuring floral detailing, like the Boho style with deep red upper and retro floral print on the heel.  We wonder if the new Keds ambassador, Taylor Swift, had anything to do with these ones!

Children’s feet come in many different sizes and grow at very different rates which can make buying kids shoes a major mission for all the parents out there.  We’ve put together a few top tips to keep in mind when searching for shoes for your little ones.

Parents often tell us that their kids’ feet are continuously growing which makes it hard to work out which size to choose.  The best tip we can give here is to measure your child’s foot from the edge of the sole (back of the heel) to their big toe.  If you’re looking at the Converse kids range, you can then refer to the help with sizes page on the website which provides inner sole centimetre measurements.  Whilst this is only a guide, it can greatly assist when it comes to size selection.  If you’re still not sure, try our printable Converse Kid’s Sizing Chart.  Just be sure not to alter the page settings when printing. 

If you find that your child’s foot falls between two sizes, we always suggest going up a size so that your child can grow in to the shoes and get more wear out of each pair.  There’s nothing more frustrating than buying new shoes and finding that your child has outgrown them within a couple of weeks!

For those of you shopping for Converse kid’s shoes, there are lots of sizing groups to choose from so just about every kid is covered.  The First Star range is suitable for children aged 0-2 years, like these adorable Prewalker Canvas Chucks.  They have a soft sole for cushioning which doesn’t affect the natural growth of the child’s feet.  And these new knitted booties are part of a 3-piece Newborn Pack which is completely irresistible!

It’s at about this time of year when the world gets a little starry eyed as Hollywood gears up for its annual awards season.  From the Golden Globes in January to the Academy Awards in February, it’s a feast for the eyes of every film and television buff out there!

So as Hollywood prepares for its impending celebrations, we couldn’t resist giving you a little star studded performance of our own.  Check out this hot new collection of Converse Chuck Taylor Star Prints; you’re sure to enjoy your own fifteen minutes of fame every time you step out in these!

Love Christmas and love your Converse Chucks?  Now is the perfect time to customise your Chucks with some festive cheer!  We’ve created a step by step guide to help you on your way.  Check it out here.

Firstly, to get started you’ll need the following tools:

·       1 x pair of Converse Chuck Taylor Hi Tops (any colour you like)

·       1 x can of spray paint (flat white)

·       1 x packet of small bells

·       1 x packet of large sequins

·       1 x packet of gem scrapbook brads

·       1 x packet of Christmas brads

·       1 x Stanley Knife (under adult supervision)

·       1 x sewing needle

·       1 x cotton thread (approx. three metres)

·       1 x pen

·       Make sure you’re wearing old daggy clothes as things might get messy!

These are only suggestions so feel free to choose your own accessories and get creative!  Your local craft shop will have loads to choose from.

So once you have all of your tools it’s time to get decorating:

1.     Ensure that your Chucks are clean and free of any dirt or dust.

2.     Remove the laces from one shoe and put aside.  Fold back the upper of the sneaker to ensure no paint will get on the rest of the upper and pull the tongue up and away from the shoe.  Lightly spray the tongue with the spray paint (in a well-ventilated area) and leave to dry.

3.     You can now re-lace your sneaker.  Set your Christmas brads up in a pattern in front of you, ensuring that the pattern will fit the space on the outside of the shoe.  Now draw a pattern of dots as a guide in a light pen ink.  This is where you will be cutting to insert each brad.  Use your Stanley knife to make a very small hole in the canvas, using each dot as your guide.

4.     Insert the brads in to each hole that you have made.

5.     Fold back the arms on the inside of the brad ensuring that all are flat and no remaining arms are sticking out, or they may pinch your ankle when you are wearing them!

6.     Repeat the process with your remaining brads and complete your Christmas pattern.

7.     Now it’s time for the bells!  We used five bells only as the canvas on the heel is quite tough to pierce.  As we did earlier, draw five dots along the spine of the sneaker with enough distance between each to allow the bells to hang properly.  Thread your needle and start sewing from the inside of the sneaker, pushing the needle through the dot on the canvas.  Thread on the bell and push the needle from the front of the fabric through to the back using a back stitch.  Knot each thread from the inside once finished to ensure the bells don’t fall off.

8.     Your bells should now be sitting in a straight line down the spine of the sneaker!

9.     Your Christmas inspired sneaker is now complete.  Make sure you take a moment to admire your hard work!

10.  If you have more Chucks you want to customise, you could try some other designs like hanging sequins from the top of the sneaker.  Using the previous method, draw a pattern of dots around the opening of the sneaker.  For these particular sequins we want them to overlap so keep this in mind when drawing on the dots.  Using the same method as Step 7, push through your needle and thread through the sequins.  Repeat the process and tie off each sequence once finished.  Make sure you don’t thread the sequins too tightly or they may sit awkwardly.

11.  Refer to Step 3 and follow the same process for your new pattern and gem brads.

12.  Your second design should now be complete.  Time for a coffee break!

So there you have it, a couple of ways to customise your Converse Chuck Taylors (with a hint of Christmas!).

Longer and warmer days are finally here and everyone at Authentics HQ seems to have an extra hop in their step!  While we’re extremely excited to be able to walk around in t-shirts and shorts, we also know that we’re going to have to work hard on those hot days to keep ourselves cool. 

So we went on a mission to the warehouse to find our most summer friendly footwear and we found this, the Converse Sandstar Thong.  These fashionable thongs will match just about any summer outfit while keeping your feet nice and cool.  They’re super practical too with no hands required, just slide in your feet and you’re off! 

Coming in a variety of colours and prints, we reckon the Converse Sandstar Thong is the easiest (and breeziest) shoe to wear this summer!    

The team at Authentics HQ has been rummaging through the archives looking for something a little different to show you, and it looks like we found it!  We know you all love Converse so we’ve pulled out some of the old Chuck Taylor music collaborations.  The styles we’ve covered here were all released between 2000 and 2008 so check them out for a blast from the past!

1.     The Kurt Cobain collaboration – created posthumous – featured sketches, quotes and lyrics from the rocker’s personal notebook printed onto a signature grunge-look Chuck Taylor.  Fashioned on the late rocker’s personal look, the shoes featured Kurt’s name embroidered on the side and a worn-in look on the soles for that little extra authenticity.  

2.     The Who collaboration with its bold Britannia colours definitely screamed English rock!  Featuring the recognisable bullseye logo and the Union Jack, this was one eye-catching collaboration.

3.     The Doors collaboration celebrated the infamous 60’s band and featured prints of the late Jim Morrison, The Doors logo and a patchwork style upper.  This range had something for every fan of the iconic band.

4.     A shoe or a masterpiece?  The Pink Floyd collection featured psychedelic artwork from three of the band’s albums emblazoned on the uppers.  Like the band, these styles will transcend generations of music lovers!

What’s your favourite Converse shoe collaboration?

We are passionate about the brands we stock so we couldn’t resist compiling a short brand spotlight for our readers.  In this brand spotlight we are profiling Saucony…enjoy!

Saucony is a brand with roots that stem all the way back to 1898 and its name translates to ‘mouth of a river’.  The name pays homage to its founding location on the banks of the Saucony Creek and this is represented in its logo which symbolises rocks, represented by the three dots, in a river creek bed.

As you can imagine, I get to look at lots of fantastic shoes all day so I thought I’d put together a list of my current favourites to share with you…

I love the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Canvas Lo Black.  It’s a classic style and perfect for any first timer to Converse.  I recommend this shoe to anyone who hasn’t worn Converse before.  This shoe is perfect for everyday casual wear but it can also be dressed up.  I even know lots of people who have worn this iconic shoe to their wedding! 

The Converse Lady Outsider Boot is my favourite style in the Converse boot range so far and it’s perfect with jeans or tights.  I wore these boots here at work recently and everyone was commenting on how great they looked, even the guys!

As I am a moderate pronator, I’ve found the Saucony Mirage to be the perfect gym shoe!  This style in particular is light weight and I’ve found it to be extremely responsive when jogging or walking.  They are so comfortable it’s like being on cloud 9!

Is it just me ladies or is there a slight 70’s vibe going on with the Keds Women’s Ankle Wrap Slip On?  Either way, they are very fashionable and I think they’re perfect for the warmer months ahead when paired with a dress, skirt or even denim shorts.  A little bit boho!

Looking for something to just throw on your feet in the warmer months without any effort? The Converse Chuck It Lady CVOs are perfect! These shoes are not only easy to put on but also fashionable to wear with just about anything and I find they add a great nautical touch to my outfits. 

I don’t have children myself but I am in love with these brand new Converse Kids Animal Slips!  They are so easy for parents to put on their children’s feet and they also look adorable of course.  What child wouldn’t love having these cute critter designs on their feet?

Sizes

The first thing you need to keep in mind about Chucks is that they're sold in American sizes rather than European. Fortunately, the American shoe sizing system is identical to Australia's, so it's pretty easy to find a perfect-fitting pair of All Stars.

Converse makes its most popular style in three sizing categories: Womens, Kids and Unisex or Mens. So remember that unless a style is marked as Womens or Kids, its sizing follows Australian Mens standards. Keep in mind that standard Chuck Taylors are usually a slightly larger fit so you might need to go down a size.  You can check out the help with sizes page on our website for more info or if you are ever in doubt, feel free to give us a call and we can talk you through it.

Classic Style

The classic Chuck Taylor shoes come in three basic styles, each of which is still available today.  These styles are:

-        Black canvas upper with black rubber soles. These are typically shown with black or white laces, though other colours can be purchased and substituted to create a fresh look.

-        Black canvas upper with white rubber soles that feature a black stripe. These also typically have white laces and are the style that most people think of when they envision Chucks.

-        White leather or canvas upper with white rubber soles trimmed with red and blue. Inspired by the colours of the American flag, this style usually features white laces as well.

All three styles are high tops, meaning that they stop just above the ankle. High tops offer additional ankle support, but most importantly they look VERY fashionable when paired with jeans, chinos, shorts and just about any other street wear you can think of; we even know of people wearing them with suits and dresses on their wedding day!

In addition to being a high top, the original Chuck Taylors featured a white circular patch emblazoned with a star and the words "Converse All Star" and "Chuck Taylor." This patch is still found on many of the high top Chucks.

New Styles

The modern All Stars collection features a number of new styles. Along with these, Converse regularly releases special limited edition Chucks that feature bold patterns or new embellishments and make these styles available for only a short period of time.  Blink and you’ll miss them!

-        High (Hi) Tops now come in a huge range of colours. While many people match the shade of their Chucks to their outfits, it's also common to pick a contrasting eye-catching colour, or if you're playing sports, to have your Chucks in your team's colours.

-        Low (Lo) Tops are similar to the high top styles but stop at the ankle instead of above it. They’re just as versatile as High Tops and the options really are endless.

-        Oxfords are a more fashionable take on the classic Chucks style.  Featuring canvas, leather or a combination of both, the shoes have a low cut around the ankles. These shoes come in a wide variety of colors and prints and are extremely popular.

-        X-Hi Tops are a special style for the ladies and are a cross between a fashion boot and a sneaker. The shoes stop along the low calf rather than just above the ankle. Most often, X-Hi Tops are worn with skirts or with leggings or skinny jeans.

No doubt you have already guessed what we’ll be suggesting but we can’t help ourselves, we LOVE shoes and clothes! We’re pretty sure your dad doesn’t quite share the same enthusiasm as us so we think Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to get him a gift he will truly appreciate; one that gets him out of a dreaded trip to the local shopping centre of course!
